Following on the heels of the successful Snapchat-owned Bitmoji, Facebook introduced a custom avatar program in May of this year. According to Fidji Simo, head of Facebook app, “Avatars enable you to share a range of emotions and expressions via a digital persona that’s uniquely representative of you.” The avatar program was actually originally discovered hidden in the code of the Facebook app by a student developer in 2018. Upon sharing his findings on Twitter, Facebook came out and confirmed to TechCrunch that they were, in fact, preparing a custom avatar program.
Now that the program is live and available to all US users, you might have seen your friends using their avatar in Facebook stories, comments, and Messenger conversations. We at fig social love the idea of having a custom avatar, so we thought we’d share an easy step-by-step process to creating your very own digital persona.
Step One: Update or Download the Facebook App
Once you’ve downloaded or updated your Facebook app, open the menu by clicking the hamburger icon. After opening the menu, scroll down to the tab labeled with “See More” and tap the down arrow to expand that tab. The Avatar tab will be available here.
Step Two: Get Started
The Avatar creation program will open from within the Facebook application. Click through the introductory slides in order to access the builder.
Step Three: Choose Hair Style and Color
And now, let the fun begin. Who doesn’t love these digi-me building programs? I’ll be creating my avatar to fit my persona, so it’s blonde long hair all the way on this first one.
Step Four: Choose Face Shape and Complexion
Round, square, or heart-shaped face? Freckles? Beauty marks? They have it all.
Step Five: Choose Eye Shape, Color, and Makeup (if any)
The eye shape felt like more of a stab in the dark to me. I clicked through several until I found one that felt right. As for the eye color, you’ve got plenty of colors and hues to choose from.
Step Six: Choose Eyebrow Shape, Color, and Bindi (if applicable)
And no, my eyebrows don’t match my hair color.
Step Seven: Choose Eyewear and Color, Nose Shape, and Optional Nose Ring
I actually wear glasses 75% of the time but opted to keep my avatar eye-wear free.
Step Eight: Choose Mouth Shape, Lip Color, and Optional Facial Hair
Opted out on the facial hair, but went for my natural mouth shape and favorite dusty-rose lip color.
Step Nine: Choose Body Shape, Outfit, and Headwear
I have to admit that I was a tad let down by the outfit options. Facebook needs some serious improvement to their wardrobe department. But the option to add a backwards hat made my athleisure-loving self happy.
Step Ten: Choose Headwear Color and Earrings
Dusty pink hat: check. Hoop earrings (that you can hardly see): also check.
Step Eleven: Finished!
And that’s a wrap! Your digital persona is now ready to go out into the Facebook world. If you ever want to make changes, you can easily edit the avatar at any time.
The Avatar creator program is just another step being taken by Facebook to improve the overall user experience and to keep up with other popular social network features on the web. We hope you find this guide easy to follow as you put together your own digital persona!
